iPhone 3G Jailbreak Guide

This tutorial is now out of date (the current iPhone firmware is 3.x), but I plan to update this tutorial in the near future.

A new tutorial from DerangedTaco! This one will show you how to jailbreak your iPhone 3G on firmware 2.2.1. This may work with the iPod Touch as well but I haven't tested it myself. Also included in this video is a guide on how to get free apps from the App Store! Download links: QuickPWN 2.2.1 / iPhone Firmware 2.2.1

Common Problems / FAQ

  • If your iPhone keeps restarting during the WinPWN process and you are unable to launch any apps, you are experiencing the WALD (White Apple Logo of Death). You need to restore your firmware. Connect your iPhone to your computer via USB and make sure that iTunes is closed. Hold down the home and power buttons on your phone for 10 seconds. Then release the power button but continue holding down home. Now open iTunes, and your phone should be detected. Click "Restore".
  • "Ohnoes my iPhone is dead!" Probably not. Try holding down the home and power buttons for 10 seconds. This should solve your problem. But whatever you do, don't put your phone in a goddamn freezer...
  • "How do I install cracked apps?" The easiest way is to get miPatch and Installous from the repository http://cydia.hackulo.us/.
  • If you are unable to download anything in Installous: SSH into your phone and change the permissions of "/var/mobile/Library/Downloads" to 0777.
  • If you are still unable to download anything with Installous: Reinstall both miPatch and Installous, then reboot your phone. And make sure that you have at least one free app from the App Store already installed.
  • "I can't make calls anymore! The Phone app crashes on me!" Some 3rd party apps may involuntarily cause this, specifically: Kate, Ripdev Preferences, and Mobile Enhancer. Get rid of them.
  • If you still can't make calls after removing the apps listed above, you may need to restore your iPhone to factory settings and start over (see top).
  • "I have a question about yellowsn0w..." Ask somewhere else. I can't help you.
  • "Where do I download QuickPWN?" Here. Make sure that you decompress the .zip before opening QuickPWN.
  • "Where do I download iPhone firmware 2.2.1?" You should search google for "iphone firmware 2.2.1 download" and find a suitable source. I am unable to upload it to Rapidshare because of the file's large size. The 2.2.1 firmware may now be downloaded here or here.
  • "New apps won't show up on my phone anymore." The iPhone's springboard is only capable of displaying 129 apps, in addition to the pre-installed ones (eg., Mail, Stocks, Weather). More than 129 apps may be installed, but the icons for those apps will not be visible. However, gLauncher (from Cydia) is capable of detecting and starting these "invisible" apps.
Thanks for following my guide! Have fun with all of your 3rd party apps and whatnot.
Additional notes: Once you're finished with the tutorial, you may re-enable the "Automatically sync when this iPhone is connected" option. And to clarify: Installous is used for pirating software from the App Store. Cydia/Installer are used for downloading 3rd party software.
